Save Money, Save the Planet:
Buy Tax-Free Energy Star Products this Week-end

This Memorial Day Week-end, from 12:01 AM on Saturday, March 24th, to
11:59 P.M. Monday, March 26th, help reduce your electricity bills, and cut
back greenhouse gas emissions, by investing in eight different types of
Energy Star products, and pay no state or local sales tax.

The Tax-Free Holiday is courtesy of the 2007 Legislative Session, as Texas
became one of three states to offer a tax-free holiday week-end on energy
efficient products. Making the list of products that can be purchased
tax-free include Energy Star-rated refrigerators that cost up to $2,000,
air conditioning systems that cost less than $6,000, dehumidifiers,
ceiling fans, incandescent and flourescent lightbulbs, dishwashers,
programmable thermostats, and clothes washers .

Problem: Texans need to reduce their energy consumption.

Texans need to reduce their energy consumption or else utilities will
continue to feel the need to invest in dirty coal-plants, risky nuclear
power and volatile natural gas plants. The Public Utility Commission
estimates that annual electricity peak demand increases each year by 2.5%.
Every kilowatt "consumed" translates into more radioactive waste, more
global warming and ozone-forming emissions from coal plants and more
drilling of natural gas wells.

Solution: Buy Energy Star Rated Products Tax-Free This Week-end

By far the cheapest, quickest and cleanest way to meet our electricity
demand is by becoming more efficient in our energy use. A recent report by
Optimal Energy showed that Texas can meet 80% of load growth in
electricity by 2021 through energy efficiency, demand response, and
on-site renewable power. Texans can do their part this week-end by finally
going out and investing in products that have been rated by the
Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy as "Energy
Star" products that use between 20 and 50 percent less than "normal"
appliances of the same type. This week-end, from 12:01 A.M. Saturday to
11:59 P.M. Monday,  save energy and money at local outlets.
