Travis Brown, president of Neighbors for Neighbors -- about 350
citizens of Bastrop and Lee County who have organized to oppose a
strip mine about 50 miles east of Austin that provides lignite, a low-
grade brown coal for Aloca's aluminum smelter -- will join, Smitty,
Texas Public Citizen director, and Cyrus Reed, Lone Sierra Club
conservation director, in a panel discussion following "Burning the
Future: Coal in America," this Thursday at Ruta Maya Coffee House on
South Congress.
"Burning the Future" is a powerful, stirring account of how people
living in West Virginia, faced with toxic ground water and the
obliteration of 1.4 million acres of mountains, courageously take a
stand to save their beloved mountains, their homes, their health and
their communities.
The evening begins with music by Cindy Pitts at 6 pm. The film begins
at 6:45 pm followed by the panel discussion.
The Environmental Film Series is hosted by Clean Water Fund as a
fundraiser for the organization's environmental research and
education programs. The event is free -- donations of $5 and more are
gratefully accepted. Thank you to Barr Mansion, our Platinum Reel
Sponsor, and our other sponsors for making this film series possible.
