Greetings from the Wildland Conservation Division office,
We have a couple of educational events happening this weekend that I wanted to be sure you knew about.
On Saturday we are holding the 2nd Lecture as part of the BCP Hike & Lecture Series. The title is “On the Edge: Fire Behavior in Woodlands and Meadows of Central Texas Landscapes” and will be given by Dr. Joseph White from Baylor University . We are holding it at Bailey Middle School near the southern end of Brodie Lane in the southwest part of town. There is no registration requirement, it is free, and afterwards you will have the option of driving over to a nearby wildland site to view acreage managed by prescribed fires. With all the talk about fires in our area this is a great opportunity to learn a little and pose questions to the experts. You can see more details at http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/water/wildland/onlineregistration/ecowebevents.cfm in the top grouping of events.
On Sunday there will be a “Birding on the Edge” hike at the BCP’s Vireo Research Area. This hike is a new offering in our suite of choices for educational access on BCP properties. Though it has an early start time at 7:30 a.m. it will be worth it. Not only does that help beat the heat but you’ll be with a superb birder who will aid you in identifying those singers that tend to get quiet as the morning and warmer temperatures set in. You can see more details about this hike at http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/water/wildland/onlineregistration/ecowebevents.cfm in the 2nd grouping of events “Guided Hikes on the BCP”. You do need to register for this one and we actually have several spaces left.
Please note we also have several other hikes scheduled in the coming 6 weeks, many of which still have space. These are great chances to see some spectacular landscape, learn more about local wildland conservation, and get a bit of exercise.
Happy hiking,
Gail
