Some people have asked me what free things are going on associated with the Congress for New Urbanism national conference being held here in Austin (and starts today). Here are the ones I've found so far. There are other things, like tours, that non-conference attendees can buy tickets for if there is room. Austin's Past and Future: Green and Growing
Business This informal plenary session with Austin Mayor Will Wynn and architect Sinclair Black showcases the city as a place of booming urbanism and cutting-edge green technology. Mayor Will Wynn will discuss global warming and the city's efforts to curb the trend. Stefanos Polyzoides will present Sinclair Black with the Athena Medal for Lifetime Achievement. Sinclair Black has been an active educator, urban designer, architect, and environmentalist throughout his professional career, striving to preserve the natural and man- made beauty of central Texas through his extensive efforts. To open this session CNU will honor O'Neil Ford and Charles Moore for their outstanding contributions to architecture and urbanism. LEED-ND Working Session
Business The Congress for the New Urbanism partnered with the Natural Resources Defense Council & the U.S. Green Building Council to certify neighborhood development projects through the LEED for Neighborhood Development rating system. Since early 2007, 238 pilot projects from 39 states & 6 countries are now in various stages of the certification process. Hear leading New Urbanists present case studies of certified & local pilot projects & discuss lessons learned so far.
